Out of the oh-so-many favourite moments I’ve had as being a new mother, none have been more significant than those middle of the night feedings and rocking Matthew to sleep after his little tummy has had its fill. Those moments, I find, with no distractions and complete silence surrounding me except for the soft coos of the babe sleeping against my chest, are my opportunity to slow down, pray over my son, and speak life over him. Far more often than not these moments are accompanied by a steady stream of tears, the result of an unexplainably deep love I have for the little man. There’s really not a sweeter and more intimate moment.
I truly believe that it is so important that we as parents continually speak life over our children. For in this world, even while there is so much joy to be found, there is also so much negativity and destruction. It’s quite striking the weight and power that words have over a person. The spoken work can literally build a person up, encouraging them to be who they are, to pursue their dreams and use their God-given talents, reminding them of who they are in Christ, OR the spoken word can literally destroy a persons confidence, sending them into the bliss of despair and hopelessness, into seclusion, worry and a multitude of other issues.
We are called to encourage one another and build each other up in the Lord, and where better to begin than our own offspring. One way that I speak life over Matthew is by speaking scripture over him. I don’t necessarily pull out my Bible and read verse by verse, word for word. I simply recall verses that I have hidden in my heart and speak them aloud in my own words. Below are some of my favourite verses to speak over little M.
“For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11 NLT
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” – Zephaniah 3:17 ESV
“And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid..” – Matthew 10:30 NLT
“Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you.” – Jeremiah 1:5 MSG
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvellous – how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!” – Psalms 139:13-18
So ladies, how do you speak life over your children? How do you make sure they are built up and encouraged and not tore down and destroyed?
