Yesterday over at IF:Gathering, Shauna Niequist livestreamed in to chat about her newest book Present Over Perfect. Some of the things she said really resonated with me, so much so that I thought it pertinent to share them with you.
The first thing that Shauna said that struck me right down to my core was the life-changing, mountain-moving question “Do the values you hold match the life that you are living?”
Does that hit you as hard as it hit me? I mean, I’ve been dwelling on that question ever since.
Does my life really, truly reflect the values that I hold dear? Do I live my life according to my belief in God’s love and grace? Do I live my life according to my conviction that slow living is of the utmost importance, that joy is to be found in the small, mundane, everyday moments?
Shauna goes on to say that our souls, our bodies, and our dreams are worth listening to, and that at the end of it all, what it really comes down to is being deeply grounded in God’s unconditional love.
So ponder with me. What are our souls, our bodies, and our dreams saying to us? Is your soul crying out in hunger and thirst for a deeper relationship with our Creator? Is your body crying out for rest? Are your dreams pushing you to step out of your comfort zone, to take ahold of the stars that the world is telling you are out of reach?
I know that my soul is crying out for a deep relationship with God, but also with other women. My body is crying out for rest, for that slow life that I dream of. My dreams are calling me to write, to put that pen to paper and start scribbling out the rough draft to my first book.
What about you?
We were created by God. Period. And that is where our value lays. And it’s from being grounded in God’s unconditional love that we move and have our beings and live our lives. And as I was telling little Matthew yesterday afternoon, God has given him desires and gifts and dreams and certain characteristics, all of which blend together to create the man God has called him to be, to do what God has called him to do.
So, now to you. What are your thoughts, your desires, your dreams? Are you living your life according to the values you hold dear? If not, what changes can you make?
